The Frank Book Hardcover Readers who haven’t discovered Jim Woodring’s “Frank” stories have a colossal treat waiting for them. Since 1991, these lusciously rendered, hypnotic fables have dazzled comics readers the world over. Now, for the first time, Fantagraphics will collect all the Frank stories in one massive and deluxe tome, The Frank Book. Between its handsome cloth covers are 344 pages of Frank comics, drawings and oddities. A fancy dustjacket, swoon-inducing endpapers and ribbon bookmark make this book a decorative object as well as a repository of storytelling genius. Frank is a unique, visionary comic, exquisitely drawn and so fully realized that readers find themselves drawn deeply into Woodring’s hallucinatory mindscape. The stories, almost entirely wordless, are told with brilliant, candy colors that people of all ages find alluring. Is The Frank Book a book for children? For some children, certainly: smart, secure children who enjoy a good puzzle and aren’t too upset by a little grim mayhem. This is strong stuff, in places. What are the stories about? It’s impossible to say... clued-in readers all agree they are about something, but the world of Frank must be experienced to be understood.

Seeing Things Hardcover Jim Woodring’s charcoal drawings take the otherworldly qualities of his comics (The Frank Book) to a higher level of clarity and nuance. These crisply rendered images reflect his life-long obsession with hidden worlds, alternate realities and the inexplicable resonance of the unprecedented and irrational in lucid art. Seeing Things collects the most toothsome of these drawings and arranges them in four sections. “Lazy Robinson” is a series of portraits of forms taken by a cognizant object during the course of a specific and identifiable stream of thought. “Frogs” celebrates the tender proclivities of the most noble of all animals, by placing them in situations that would dismay a horde of saints. “The Visible World” is a roundup of appalling scenes of sub-rational political activity involving catalytic entities with a high ratio of motivation to altruism. And “The Portfolio in Color” appears like a rainbow at the end of all this exalted storminess to send readers out into the world whistling with delight. Many of these images were created for “Mysterio Sympatico,” Woodring’s multimedia stage collaboration with guitarist Bill Frisell. There is plenty of echoless, glowing furniture to add to that already crowded storeroom which is briefly, but brilliantly, illuminated in the pages of this stately book. 104 PGS.

Trosper FRANK creator Jim Woodring and legendary jazz guitarist/Nonesuch recording artist Bill Frisell have collaborated to create this unique multimedia storybook for the ages. Reminiscent of a Little Golden Book, this full-color, hardcover storybook is a delightful story made all the more special with the inclusion of a CD created and recorded by Frisell especially for this book and inspired directly by Woodring's story. With one full-color painting per page, and no words, Woodring has crafted a simple narrative of innocence and fear that will inspire multiple re-readings by children and adults for years to come. The accompanying CD comes packaged inside the book in a custom pocket. Frisell's ambient and ethereal jazz soundtrack creates a remarkable aural tension that perfectly accompanies Trosper's fraught-filled adventure as well as Woodring's eye-poppingly vibrant and colorful landscapes.
